Vorstius, Conradus

Vorstius, Conradus
(1569–1622)
   Theologian.
Vorstius was born Konrad von der Vorst in Cologne, Germany. He was a student of beza in Geneva and he subsequently taught at Steinfurt near Heidelberg. There he was accused of Socinianism, but was cleared of the charge. After the death of arminius in 1609, he was invited to take his place in Leyden. Meanwhile Arminius’s followers had issued the Remonstrance in an attempt to soften the rigid Calvinism of the Dutch Church. At the same time Vorstius published his Tractatus Theologicus de Deo, sive de Natura et Attributatis Dei, which provoked a storm of controversy from the Calvinist Counter- Remonstrants. Even King James I of England felt obliged to draw up a list of its theological mistakes. Vorstius was forced to resign in 1612. He went on to translate works of sozzini and was condemned at the Synod of Dort.
